Tech Talk!

We’re often asked how we’re able to successfully deal with tool pressure when we’re deep drilling tough materials like Titanium, tool steels and stainless steel.

In fact, many of our clients have turned to us to handle this challenge for them, after their former suppliers haven’t been able to address their micro gun drilling requirements.

To start with, of course, we love a challenge, and really enjoy showcasing our skills and attention to detail.

Here are the steps we follow:

  • First, we make sure to engineer the drill length to the part. This requires that we order our gun drills with just enough extra length for resharpening.
  • Often, we’ll drill with two gun drills. The first drill (which is shorter) then provides a deeper pocket and support for the (longer) finishing drill.
  • Next, we slow down the feed rate as much as possible.
  • Finally, we’ll take the drill out and keep a sharp edge, since as the drill loses its edge the tool pressure increases proportionately.

If you’ve been experiencing problems with your micro gun drilling processes, feel free to contact us directly with your questions.

Whether or not your situation is related to tool pressure, we’d love to take a look and show you how we can provide you with the solutions you need!
